A Conversation about Grief and Loss: Join Us May 20

This winter was heavy, as our local, regional, and global backcountry communities suffered profound loss. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we are here to say that you are not alone in trying to navigate and process grief after a particularly troubling winter.

Teton County Search & Rescue is acutely aware of how deeply our community hurts after a backcountry fatality. And while we are not in the business of making that grief disappear, we are here to start the conversation about what community resources, clinical tools, and stories of survival might help.

With support from Teton County Public Health and Teton Interagency Peer Support (TIPS), TCSAR invites you to attend a very special conversation about mental health at the Black Diamond store on Wednesday, May 20.

Panelists include TCSAR Board member Sara Adamson, TCSAR volunteer Brook Yeomans, and TCSAR volunteer Doug Van Houten. Clinician Lynnette Gaertner, LCSW, will serve as moderator.

The panel will share personal perspectives, practical resources, and pathways for support in the wake of tragedy.

All are welcome, whether you are navigating your own experience or showing up for others. Professional, trauma-informed clinicians will be present in the case you need someone to talk to during the event. Please register, as space is limited.

TCSAR Recognizes Volunteers For Outstanding Service

Jackson, Wyo. — Teton County Search & Rescue recently recognized numerous volunteers for reaching significant milestones in their commitment to the team and the betterment of our community.

Each summer, the organization honors those volunteers who have reached 10 years of service or more, in five-year increments. The volunteers who reach these milestones receive a limited-edition belt buckle at the team’s summer picnic. This year, Teton County Commissioners also recognized the volunteers with a certificate of service.

This year, volunteers Chris Stiehl and Carol Viau were recognized for their 25 years of service on TCSAR. Having joined the team in 2000, the two are among the most tenured volunteers in the organization. Only Tim Ciocarlan (1993), Mike Moyer (1993), Mike Estes (1993), and Jenn Sparks (1998) have been on the team longer.

Ten Years and Counting

The volunteers who have reached the 15-year mark include: Ryan Combs, Ethan Lobdell, Cody Lockhart, and Galen Parke.

Reaching the 10-year anniversary include volunteers: KC Bess, Phillip Fox, Chase Lockhart, Ryan Mertaugh, Keegan Pfeil, Scott Shervin, Anthony Stevens, Doug Van Houten, and Don Watkins.

Of the 36 volunteers on TCSAR, 27 have served for more than 10 years. Every year, TCSAR volunteers collectively donate more than 10,000 hours of service back to the community in the form of rescues, trainings, and backcountry safety education. All rescues performed by TCSAR are free of charge.

Please join us in thanking all of these volunteers for their exceptional commitment to our community.

The Fine Line Presents: "Tougher Than A Spud Bar"

As you know from following Teton County Search & Rescue, there are a million and one ways for people to get into trouble in the backcountry. And it is unfair to assume that everyone is being reckless.

Sometimes, they just get their foot stuck.

In the next episode of The Fine Line, Teton County Search & Rescue volunteer Doug Van Houten takes us back to an incident from 2018 when the SAR team had to pull out all the stops in order to help a Nordic skier get out of a jam, literally, in Teton Canyon. It goes to show you never know what you might need to get the job done.

“Tougher Than A Spud Bar” airs today, August 1, at 2 p.m. on KHOL 89.1 FM, and afterward on your preferred podcast platform.

Produced by Backcountry Zero, Season 8 of The Fine Line is presented by Stio, with support from Arc'teryx and KHOL. Original art above by Jen Reddy.
